COPPER CANYON – 25 DAY PIGGY–BACK & MAZATLAN

(B= Breakfast    BLD= Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner   D= Dinner)

DAY 1: COLUMBUS (NEW MEXICO)

Day reserved for the preparation of documents, insurance check, money changing and trip briefing. There will be an opportunity to meet staff members at a continental breakfast meeting.

DAY 2: COLUMBUSCASAS GRANDES(D)

"Caravan" across the US border into Mexico at PALOMAS - on to NUEVO CASAS GRANDES the commercial centre of this thriving area. The Paquimé ruins are nearby.

DAY 3: CASAS GRANDES - CHIHUAHUA

Morning tour of the Museum of the Northern Cultures and the Paquimé archaeological site where both Pueblo Indian and Mesoamerican influences are evident - pottery making demonstration. Afternoon – on to CHIHUAHUA.

DAY 4: CHIHUAHUA(D)

Morning – a tour of the city of CHIHUAHUA to include the State Capital building, the cathedral and the Pancho Villa Museum where the 1919 Dodge in which Villa was shot is on display. The day ends with a fiesta dinner with entertainment.

DAY 5: CHIHUAHUACUAUHTEMOC(D)

Drive to CUAUHTEMOC the centre of the fascinating Mennonite community. Dinner in a Mennonite home and an opportunity to learn more about the Mennonites themselves and their way of life.

DAY 6: CHIHUAHUALA JUNTA(D)

Drive to nearby LA JUNTA – load rigs onto the Chihuahua-al-Pacifico (Chepe) private train in preparation for journey to the Copper Canyon range on Day 6. Dinner at "Rosies" in LA JUNTA.

DAY 7: LA JUNTA - CREEL(D)

Travel to CREEL, the gateway to the Tarahumara Indian country – opportunities to visit the Jesuit mission, Arareco Lake and an inhabited Tarahumara cave–dwelling. Margaritas, dinner and entertainment at a local restaurant.

DAY 8: CREELDIVISADERO(D)

One and a half hour train journey to DIVISADERO, a town close to the rim of the Ulrique canyon and overlooking the point where the Ulrique, Copper and Tararecua canyons meet. During the course of the journey, the rail tracks loop over themselves in an amazing feat of engineering known as "el Lazo". The day ends with a "cook out" dinner on the rim of the canyon.

DAY 9: DIVISADERO - BAHUICHIVO

Free morning for shopping and exploration of local area – during the afternoon, continue train jouney to the quaint little village of BAHUICHIVO for an overnight stop.

DAY 10: BAHUICHIVO - LOS MOCHIS

The day will be devoted to the most spectacular part of the rail journey during which dramatic changes in altitude, landscape, ecosystems and climate will be experienced. Finally, after crossing one of the most fertile agricultural areas in Mexico, the train arrives at LOS MOCHIS where the rigs will be off–loaded and driven to a nearby full–service campground for an overnight stop.

DAY 11: LOS MOCHISEL FUERTE(D)LOS MOCHIS

Afternoon and evening trip to nearby city of EL FUERTE to include a walking tour and dinner – return to RV park in EL FUERTE on completion.

DAYS 12–16: LOS MOCHISMAZATLAN(D)

Travel to MAZATLAN for a 5-night stay on Mexico's Riviera to include a special tour of COPALA in the foothills of the Sierra Madre. Fishing trips for marlin, sailfish and "mahi–mahi can be arranged. Entertainment will include margarita parties and the famous Mexican fiesta dinner.

DAYS 17–18: MAZATLANGUASAVE(L)

Travel north to spend 2 days in the quaint seaport of GUASAVE where the full hook up RV park is close to the Sea of Cortes. During the stay there will be full-day excursions to 2 of the nearby islands – snacks, drinks & lunch included.

DAY 19: GUASAVEALAMOS

Continue to the north to the town of ALAMOS with its beautifully restored Spanish colonial architecture.

DAY 20–21: ALAMOS(D)

Stop–over spent touring ALAMOS including visit to the local pottery and a tour of the old Aduana silver mines. Evening margaritas and dinner.

DAYS 22–24: ALAMOSSAN CARLOS(D)

Drive up the Pacific coast to SAN CARLOS and an RV park overlooking the Sea of Cortes – time available for sightseeing, swimming and relaxation. Final night will be the Farewell Dinner Party.

DAYS 25: SAN CARLOSNOGALES

"Caravan" back across the border to NOGALES and then on to TUCSON. "Hasta la Vista"
